Allegheny County Jail

Visitor Policy

Interview with Brian

JM: How often could you receive visitors?
Brian: You could receive visitors when there was visiting hours. You had to have someone on your visiting list for them to be able to visit during visiting hour.

JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you?
Brian: They had to go through scanning by the security at the Jail and had to wait with others to go up to the floors that the inmates were on. I believe it was lengthy at times.

JM: What was the visiting environment like?
Brian: If you had contact visits on the First floor they you could visit someone face to face. Otherwise they would talk to you between a glass partition over a phone while they were on a phone and you were on a phone. The visitors had to go in a big room to visit you etc.

How many visits can you have in a week and in a day?

2 visits a week you can have them both the same day if you like. At a time you can have 2 adults or 1 adult and 2 children visit at the same time. The inmate can submit a vistors list once every 30 days, with up to 10 people on it (children do not need to be included). The inmate will need to know the name, address, birth date and phone number of asch intended visitor. It might be wise to mail all of this information to the inmate to assist with this. When an inmate first goes in they will often make an exception to the updating rule by allowing a second time within a 30 day period.

Actually you are not completely right; they can have 2 visits a week, with some exceptions that have only 1 per week, but they can NOT be on the same day. I found out the hard way that there is only one visit per day after driving over 2 hrs to get there.

Actually, because different floors and pods have different visiting schedules, you will need to call the jail, but it would be advisable to speak with a counselor to get those available times.
